In a beautiful fusion of Japanese tradition and American inclusivity, the 6th SEIJIN-shiki USA is set to take place on January 19, 2025, at the Meydenbauer Center Theatre in Bellevue, Washington. This unique coming-of-age celebration, organized by the JIA Foundation in collaboration with the Consulate General of Japan in Seattle, represents a growing cultural bridge between Japan and the United States.
What is SEIJIN-shiki?
SEIJIN-shiki is a cherished annual event throughout Japan. It provides a platform for the community's emerging young adults, known as new SEIJINs, to be officially acknowledged as adults and new members of the society. Since 2020, JIA Foundation's goal has been to provide support and encouragement to new SEIJINs, who come from diverse national and cultural backgrounds as they embark on their journey into adulthood.
With inclusivity at its core, the celebration is conducted entirely in English, with the vision of creating a new American tradition where coming-of-age celebrations become a shared common practice. It is also an opportunity to forge lasting friendships among the members of the "Class of SEIJIN 2025."
Participants from previous years have praised the celebration for offering a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Japanese traditions, allowing them to rediscover their own cultural identities.
