Cynthia

Owner | Bellevue Pilates

For over 20 years, Cynthia has had a passion for Pilates. Never did it occur to her that it would become a career path until the impending closure of Downtown Bellevue’s Nancy Wallace Pilates studio in the summer of 2023. Cynthia had spent those two decades of her fitness journey as a client of Master Teacher Dorothee Vandewalle about the true art of Pilates. That’s how she knew the former studio was the real deal; the type of equipment, concepts, principles, and style was authentic, staying true to the original method invented by Joseph Pilates – “I knew I had to do something. I knew there were other Pilates studios in town, but this was a complete studio with the type of instruction that delivered the results I was used to,” Cynthia said. Less than one month after her first session at the studio, Cynthia bought the equipment, hired many of the instructors, and opened Bellevue Pilates.

Being an entrepreneur wasn’t new to Cynthia. In fact, most of her life revolved around being a business owner. She recounts being part of the Future Business Leaders of America in high school and owning her first business at the age of 19. To this day, she has been a founding owner of multiple businesses. Read on to learn more about her newfound journey of owning a Pilates studio, the challenges she faced as a women-owned business, and where Cynthia sees herself in 3-5 years.

You have owned multiple businesses in Seattle, what makes owning a business here in Downtown Bellevue stand out?

There’s a strong sense of community here in Downtown Bellevue – especially the Pilates community. Others who have the same passion for Pilates enjoyed having a studio close to home, so you can imagine how difficult it was to hear about the closing of the former studio. When I decided to launch this business, the comments and notes of appreciation I received were heartwarming – it made me feel like the decision I made to help preserve this Pilates community was the right decision. I am thankful to the previous owner who has been immensely helpful to me while launching Bellevue Pilates.

What are the biggest challenges you have faced opening a Pilates studio and what do you do to overcome them?

There are so many different obstacles to overcome, especially as a woman-owned business. Even with a clear vision and direction for the future of the business, time-wasting distractions can get in the way. Remaining steadfast in my commitment to an elevated Pilates experience focused on results has been vital to its livelihood. Support from internationally recognized Master Teachers has helped me to make this a reality, despite challenges. I’ve also found showcasing hand-picked, locally owned, female businesses has helped me to plug in to the Bellevue community and scene. I look at my sister business owners as partners rather than competitors. It’s much easier to find solutions to problems and grow deep roots when we work together.

For someone who has never heard of Bellevue Pilates, how would you describe your business to them?

First and foremost, we’re authentic. This means, at Bellevue Pilates, our instruction remains true to the concepts and principles Joseph Pilates established long ago, and all our equipment is Gratz – Joseph invented it, and Gratz made it. We’ve also put a lot of effort into an elevated studio atmosphere.   When you come in, you won’t hear weights banging or gym equipment clanking. The quiet helps us all to disconnect from the crazy world and focus on our minds and bodies. We always recommend starting with a private session, so we know exactly how to help you as an individual. Understanding that what works for some may not work for others. Pilates is truly for everybody.

Since working in Downtown Bellevue, what do you think the area will look like in 3-5 years?

With any fast-growing city, there are wonderful things happening, but there is also a potential for challenges that residents and businesses could face. That’s why organizations like the Bellevue Downtown Association and the Chamber of Commerce are so vital – they provide us with an opportunity to connect with other businesses in the area.

Where do you like to dine in Downtown Bellevue?

I love exploring what Old Bellevue has to offer. One of my favorite restaurants to go to with my family is Cantinetta. I always start with manila clams, yum! I keep it fresh with my secondi, but we always order Bolognese to-go for the next day. Their classic Italian menu pairs nicely with the small neighborhood vibe that Old Bellevue exudes.

Where do you like to shop in the Heart of Bellevue?

I can’t escape Old Bellevue! I love shopping at Lorelai’s Optical. Her shop is so unique. I inevitably find a signature piece of eyewear, but I also feel like I’m snagging a smoking hot deal on Italian designer wear she procured. Love it!

Going back to your business, where do you see Bellevue Pilates in 3-5 years?

I try not to get ahead of myself, but I’d be lying if I said I don’t have big visions. I dream of one day expanding Bellevue Pilates into different neighborhoods or cities. I will continue to bring internationally recognized Master Pilates Teachers to Bellevue to benefit my team, our clients, and certified teachers from around the US. I don’t want to stay stagnant. My goal is to keep learning, enriching the lives of our clients, and developing this craft with my team to keep this studio relevant and at the top of our game.
